Plague and fire ravaged Chinatown, displacing a vibrant mix of Hawaiians, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos. Many sought refuge in the then “outer limits” of Honolulu: Kalihi. Enter Horace Wright Chamberlain, a descendant of missionaries. He recognized the needs of these displaced families, both physical and spiritual. He quickly secured property in Kalihi, laying the foundation for what would become Kalihi Union Church. The church became a beacon of hope in the growing community. Kalihi Union Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a lifeline, a gathering place, a testament to the power of community. The church’s commitment to serving its diverse congregation is woven into its very fabric. In 1991, Kalihi Union Church joined the Evangelical Free Church of America.
