Before the 18th century, this area was known as “Western” and later “Berplit”. The construction of the Mookervat Canal in 1681 played a vital role in shaping the region. This canal, brainchild of Cornelis Vincent Van Mook, connected the Cisadane and Angke rivers. Its completion in 1687 brought not only improved waterways but also revenue for the Dutch government, who levied tolls on passing vessels. The fast-flowing water of the canal earned the area its current name, Kalideres, signifying its powerful currents. This waterway became a lifeline. It provided water for daily needs, fishing, and irrigation. The Chinese community even used it for their traditional dragon boat races. Kalideres is also a transportation hub. It is serviced by the TransJakarta bus system and the KRL Jabodetabek commuter train line. The Kalideres Bus Terminal further solidifies its role as a crucial transit point. This district pulses with life, a blend of old and new. It holds the echoes of history, yet embraces the rhythm of modern Jakarta.
