Beneath the rustling leaves of Kalang Park, a secret whispers through the trees. Kalang Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a vital part of the Blackburn Creeklands, a green corridor winding through Blackburn. This corridor, formed by Blacks Walk, Furness Park, and Kalang Park itself, stretches along Gardiners Creek. Kalang Park is the largest of the three, nearly a kilometer long and covering about nine hectares. A network of paths crisscrosses the park, leading you along the creek and through indigenous bushland. Keep an eye out for tawny frogmouths nestled in the eucalyptus trees. Listen for the calls of galahs and kookaburras overhead. Near the billabong, you might spot wood ducks and their ducklings, especially in spring. South of the creek, open grassy areas offer space for sports and activities like kite flying. Hidden amongst these are pockets of revegetated areas waiting to be explored. After a rain, ephemeral wetlands appear along the southern path, transforming the landscape. Kalang Park wasn’t always so expansive. The sports oval area was acquired in 1966, forming Kalang Reserve. The rest was added later, thanks to the “Up the Creek!” campaign between 1981 and 1983. This campaign linked the three parks, creating the Kalang Park we enjoy today. So next time you’re in Kalang Park, remember, you’re walking through history, a testament to community action and the preservation of nature.
