From this vantage point on Kaitzer Höhe the panorama is breathtaking. Kaitzer Höhe a 244-meter high viewpoint offers unparalleled views. This hill wasn’t always so idyllic. It’s built on the former spoil heap of the Gittersee uranium mine. The SDAG Wismut used this land as a uranium dump. Extensive remediation transformed it into a pleasant recreational area.
Kaitzer Höhe is part of the Kaitz district in Dresden. Kaitz itself has a long and fascinating history. Its first documented mention dates back to March 31 1206. This was in an arbitration ruling by Dietrich the Imprisoned. Burchard von Kiz a local nobleman participated. He is also said to have founded Rabenau. The name Kiz or Kiez comes from the Slavic language. It means a settlement in a swampy lowland.
The area saw significant changes over centuries. In 1473 stones were quarried near Altkaitz for the Dresden Rathaus. This same stone was also used to build the Kaitz manor and workers’ houses. The area experienced devastating damage during the Battle of Dresden in 1813. A meadow where the wounded were treated is still known as the “Tränenwiese” or “Tears Meadow”. Altkaitz was largely destroyed in 1813. Reconstruction started shortly afterward.
The 19th century brought the development of more houses. This included homes built on the terraces of the former vineyard. One such house was the birthplace of Pastor Paul Richter. He died as a prisoner in Dachau concentration camp in 1942. The construction of houses led to the expansion of businesses. There were shops and restaurants. These included a print shop a shoemaker’s shop and several inns. The construction of the Wurfelhäuser or cube houses in 1892 further transformed the landscape.
The Kaitz valley was a popular recreational area. However environmental problems reduced its appeal. An old municipal landfill and waste heaps from the uranium mine polluted the area. Radioactive contamination of the Kaitzbach stream further impacted the environment. Despite the nearby Dresden main station just 5 km away Kaitz retains its village character. A community garden established in 1905 thrives.
Today Kaitzer Höhe stands as a testament to the area’s resilience. It offers a stunning view. It reminds us of the area’s past as a uranium dump. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. From this elevated spot you can see the Feldschlösschen brewery. Enjoy the panoramic vista. Reflect on the rich history that shaped this unique Dresdner spot. Remember the transformation from industrial spoil heap to a scenic viewpoint. Appreciate the enduring spirit of Kaitz and its people.
