Bet you can’t guess which little tower here is full of maritime charm and history. This is the Kaiserschleuse Ostfeuer, also known as the Pingelturm. It’s more than just a pretty structure. It’s a beacon of Bremerhaven’s rich nautical past.

The Kaiserschleuse Ostfeuer stands proudly. It marks the eastern side of the Kaiserschleuse entrance. The tower may seem small. But it has a big story to tell.

Let’s step back to 1900. Bremerhaven was booming. The Kaiserschleuse, then the world’s largest ship lock, had just been built. This tower was constructed to guide ships safely. Rudolf Rudloff, a clever harbor master, designed it.

Notice the tower’s design. It looks like a small fortress. The design showed off Bremen’s powerful port. The Kaiserschleuse Ostfeuer has a decorative battlement. A lantern sits on top. Its green light marks the starboard side of the entrance.

But there’s more to this tower than meets the eye. It was nicknamed “Pingelturm.” This comes from the local dialect for “ringing.” Why? Because of its fog bell. In foggy weather, the bell would chime four times in quick succession. It rang every ten seconds. This helped ships navigate safely. The fog bell is no longer in use.

In 2010, the Kaiserschleuse got an upgrade. A new, modern light was installed on the new eastern pier. But the old Pingelturm remained. It stands as a monument to Bremerhaven’s maritime history.

The new light is a steel lattice tower. It shines a fixed green light. It has an international number B1264.5. Its German number is 315880. It sits at 53°33’08” N and 08°34’00” E. The light is 16 meters high. It has a range of 5 nautical miles. It was put into service on April 30, 2011.

The Kaiserschleuse also has a fog signal. It makes a sound every 60 seconds. It is synchronized with the foghorn at the North Lock. There is also a warning light on the southeast side of the entrance. It has two fluorescent tubes. These are mounted on a black and yellow dolphin.

Take a good look at the Kaiserschleuse Ostfeuer. It’s a reminder of Bremerhaven’s maritime strength. It shows how the city has adapted to the times. From its historic bell to its modern lights, it has ensured safe passage for countless ships.
