Consider the name Kâğıthane. It means “paper mill” in Turkish. Today we are exploring this district of Istanbul. It is a place that has transformed dramatically over the centuries.

Kâğıthane is located on the European side of Istanbul. It sits at the far northern end of the Golden Horn. The Alibeyköy and Kâğıthane rivers meet here. They flow into the Golden Horn. Once a working-class area, Kâğıthane is now a major real estate development zone.

In Suleiman the Magnificent’s time, Kâğıthane was called Sadabad. It was a large, forested area. The Ottoman court often visited for hunting and riding. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Sadabad became a recreation center. It was known for clean waters and tulip fields. Promenades and festivities were common.

The 6th of May was considered the start of spring. During the Hıdrellez Festivals, people came from all over Istanbul. They traveled by boats and carts to the Kâğıthane River. Many paintings depict these gatherings, including weddings and picnics. Mansions and summer palaces were built in the area in the 17th and 18th centuries.

But the story of Kâğıthane takes a turn. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, industry moved in. Its strategic location made it ideal for factories. Kâğıthane became home to flour mills and paper factories. The district got its name from these paper factories. It became known as “Kağıt hane” or paper house. Although nomads and caravans visited, there was no real settlement until the late 20th century.

From the 1950s, migrants from Anatolia arrived. They came to work in factories and construction. Illegal slums began to appear. Over time, these settlements were legalized. They were gradually replaced by residential buildings.

Today, Kâğıthane is changing again. Its central location and transport links are driving urban regeneration. The new airport, bridge, and underwater tunnel will make it a hub. Real estate development is booming. There are mixed-use, shopping mall, hotel, campus, office, and residential projects.

Kâğıthane’s neighborhoods include Seyrantepe, Hamidiye, and Çağlayan. Also Merkez and Gültepe are part of Kâğıthane.

Kâğıthane has several attractions. Santralistanbul is a former power station. It is now an Energy Museum and arts space. The Kâğıthane Mosque has been rebuilt several times. It sits on a pretty waterside site. Istanbul Sapphire is a skyscraper with a viewing platform.

Kâğıthane is easily accessible. Metro lines M7 and M11 serve the area. Çağlayan is served by M7 only.

So, Kâğıthane has transformed from a royal hunting ground. It became an industrial center and a modern residential area. It is a district in constant motion. Its rich history is still visible beneath the surface of modern life. As we leave Kâğıthane, consider how history shapes a place. Consider how a place shapes history.
