Have you heard about a school that’s not just a school but also Schleswig-Holstein’s School of the Year 2020? That’s the Käte-Lassen-Schule in Flensburg. Founded in 1951 the Käte-Lassen-Schule was named after Flensburg painter and sculptor Käte Lassen. However many students and teachers lovingly call it “Käte”.

The Käte-Lassen-Schule’s story is one of constant evolution. It transitioned from a Realschule to a Regionalschule with open all-day care in 2008. Two years later it became a community school. This community school emphasizes long-term learning. It prepares students for societal challenges.

Nestled in a quiet residential area on Flensburg Fjord’s eastern shore the Käte-Lassen-Schule boasts green spaces. Around 500 students are taught by 50 teachers in 19 classes. A school social worker also provides support. Its manageable size helps students to settle in. Students easily connect with the school and teachers.

The school is divided into five building complexes. The main building houses most specialist rooms the staff room and the office. The sports hall is adjacent. Two smaller buildings contain classrooms a music room and a biology room. The “Gartenhaus” is a newer building. It has three classrooms and two computer rooms. The newest building includes two technology rooms. It also features the canteen with the school kiosk the room for the open all-day school and the school library. Some buildings are connected by a covered walkway.

The Käte-Lassen-Schule offers varied afternoon activities and free homework support. Teachers supervise homework in small groups. Teachers professionals and older students lead working groups. It trains the highest number of school paramedics in Flensburg. Afternoon lessons in the form of optional courses and sports courses are offered for ninth and tenth grade.

The Käte-Lassen-Schule values student involvement in decisions. There is a library team media scouts kiosk helpers and mediators. Students also moderate Christmas parties and information evenings. The Käte-Lassen-Schule offers ten “pros” from the Flensburg Music School who play in the symphony orchestra. They give music lessons in the afternoon. The school enables entry into the music world. It also has a student orchestra.
