Whispers of ancient trees. That’s what you hear in the Weesrieser Gehölz. This isn’t just any forest. It’s a place where history breathes.
The Weesrieser Gehölz a woodland near Wees holds a special place in the history of this region. Its name itself tells a story. Wees refers to the nearby village. Ries means forest. So Weesrieser Gehölz quite simply means Wees’ forest. It’s a name that’s older than many of the houses in Wees itself.
Imagine this. Before houses and farms dotted the landscape the Weesrieser Gehölz was much larger. It was a significant feature of the area. It gave the surrounding village its very name. The name Weesries actually originally referred to the forest itself. The village grew up around the woodland. The forest gave the people shelter resources and maybe even a little mystery.
Old maps from 1857 and 1858 show a small settlement on the western edge of the woods. The settlement however wasn’t named yet. It appeared only a few years later on a map dating back to 1863. The Weesrieser Gehölz therefore clearly predates the village of Weesries. It was the constant in a time of changing settlements.
In 1961 the village of Weesries boasted 35 inhabitants. This number decreased slightly to 31 just a decade later. The trees of the Weesrieser Gehölz have witnessed many quiet changes in population. They have stood firm though the years passed.
The Weesrieser Gehölz isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a place of quiet beauty. Take a moment to breathe. Listen to the rustling of leaves. Feel the peace in this ancient woodland. This isn’t just a walk. It’s a journey through time. A journey to the heart of Wees’ history.
Remember the Weesrieser Gehölz. Remember its silent story. A story whispered by the wind among the trees.
