“London needs a thousand teachers.” These words, once spoken by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, echo in the very foundations of Kadampa Meditation Centre.
Welcome to Kadampa Meditation Centre. It stands as a beacon of peace amidst London’s vibrant energy. This isn’t just a building. It’s a sanctuary where the teachings of Buddha are brought to life in a way that’s easy to grasp.
Let’s step back in time. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a renowned meditation master, envisioned bringing Kadam Dharma to London. He saw the city’s immense population and potential. His intention was to create a space for spiritual growth.
Initially, Venerable Geshe-la journeyed from Manjushri Centre in Cumbria to teach in rented venues across London. Recognizing the need for a permanent space, he encouraged his followers to seek a suitable location.
After completing a three-year retreat in Tharpaland, Scotland, Venerable Geshe-la dedicated the funds from the property sale to establish new centers. This led to the creation of the New Centres Development Fund. It was the forerunner to the International Temples Project.
With the help of these funds, the first center in London was purchased. Venerable Geshe-la discovered a brochure for 13 Woodstock Road in Golders Green. He declared it ideal. The new center was named Heruka Centre. Later, it became Heruka Kadampa Meditation Centre.
Heruka Kadampa Meditation Centre opened its doors on October 17, 1992. Since then, it has become a major Kadampa Buddhist center in the UK. It has flourished.
Over the years, Heruka KMC expanded. It acquired adjacent properties. It now boasts a thriving residential community. The center offers diverse programs. These range from beginner classes to advanced retreats.
All three programs are taught at the center. These are the General Program, Foundation Program, and Teacher Training Program. The center also extends its reach with classes in various locations across north and central London.
Venerable Geshe-la later founded another center in south London. It started as Dorjechang Centre. It was a modest terraced house in Wimbledon. He envisioned a Temple and city meditation spaces throughout London. So, he renamed it Kadampa Meditation Centre London.
The Kadampa Temple in Morden opened in August 2016. It became a spiritual hub. It hosts courses, empowerments, retreats, and regional events.
Following the vision for a Temple, city meditation spaces were opened. The first was in Kensington. It opened in December 2017. It now serves as a lively center in the heart of London.
Kadampa Meditation Centre isn’t just a place. It’s a living testament to Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s vision. It reduces stress. It promotes well-being. When our minds are peaceful, we find joy in life. Our relationships with people become harmonious.
So, as you leave Kadampa Meditation Centre, carry with you the seeds of peace and wisdom. Remember Venerable Geshe-la’s words. Strive to cultivate inner peace. Share it with the world.
