The name Bekasi itself derives from Candrabhaga. Candra means moon Bhaga means part. Thus Candrabhaga means a part of the moon. A beautiful and poetic origin. The pronunciation morphed over time. It became Bhagasi then Bacassie. Eventually it settled on Bekasi.

After independence the fight for a separate Kabupaten Bekasi began. Years of struggle followed. The people’s determination won. On August 15 1950 Kabupaten Bekasi was officially born.
