Is it just me, or can you feel a June breeze? Here at Juneway Terrace Beach Park, the name isn’t a coincidence. This park, nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, was once part of a grand vision by a Norwegian immigrant named Sivert Tobias Gunderson. Arriving in Chicago in 1848, Gunderson found his fortune in the grain and lumber trade. He then turned his sights to real estate, buying up land around here. He began subdividing his property near Calvary Cemetery in June. And thus, Juneway was born. While Juneway Terrace Beach Park itself didn’t become a public space until 1959, the area has a longer history with public beaches. The City of Chicago had been running smaller beaches along the North Shore since at least 1921. They used neighboring street names to identify them, a practice the Chicago Park District continued after taking ownership of Juneway Terrace Beach Park and 17 other “street-end beaches” in 1959. So, next time you’re strolling along Juneway Terrace Beach Park, remember Sivert Tobias Gunderson and his June venture that gave this place its unique name.
