He commissioned architect Havelock E Hand and builder Gustav Dressel to build his dream home. The house underwent significant expansion and remodeling during the 1893 depression. This provided crucial work for many laborers and artisans during difficult economic times.

Sleeper’s entrepreneurial spirit shaped the house’s evolution. Initially located at 574 Holly Avenue it later moved to 66 South St Albans Street. Amazingly three buildings were connected by underground tunnels a secret passageway hidden beneath the streets of St Paul.

Inside the Julian H Sleeper House Dr Seth C Hawkins has curated a fascinating collection of Gilded Age decorative arts. Nine exhibition rooms display exquisite Eastlake furniture oriental rugs and beautiful Bradbury and Bradbury wallpaper. The house is filled with interesting details. For example the bathroom boasts Anaglypta a British Victorian textured wall covering. You can still see this unique wallpaper in the bathroom.

Beyond the decorative arts the museum also features a remarkable collection dedicated to President James A Garfield. This is a highly specialized collection with unique and extremely rare artifacts. There is even a unique exhibition on the history and culture of Slovenia. The museum is unique in its focus and extensive collection.
