“A composer’s legacy lives on.” That’s the silent promise held within this bronze bust of Julián Aguirre. Julián Aguirre was a prominent figure in Argentine music. We are standing before a monument erected in his memory.

Julián Aguirre was born in Buenos Aires on January 28 1868. He died in the same city on August 13 1924. Aguirre’s life was dedicated to music as a composer pianist and pedagogue.

As a child Julián Aguirre moved to Madrid with his family. There he studied at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. His teachers included Emilio Arrieta and Carlos Beck. He later received additional training in Paris. These European influences shaped his early musical style.

Upon returning to Argentina Aguirre became a vital part of the nation’s musical scene. He taught at the Buenos Aires Conservatory of Music. Later he established his own institution the Argentine School of Music in 1916. Aguirre was also a music critic. He wrote for the weekly magazine El Hogar between 1920 and 1924.

Aguirre was a pioneer of nationalism in Argentine music. He sought inspiration in local folk music. His compositions often explored intimate themes. This led him to focus on chamber music. Aguirre specialized in Argentine art songs especially those set to poems by Leopoldo Lugones.

His work can be divided into two main sections. These are piano pieces and songs for voice and piano. The latter makes up about four-fifths of his total output. Aguirre’s compositions include “Aires nacionales argentinos” and “Aires criollos”. His piano piece “Huella y gato” gained wider recognition through Ernest Ansermet’s orchestration. He also wrote children’s songs like “Arre caballito” and “Don gato”.

In 1926 a national law ordered a monument to be erected in his memory. It was placed in El Rosedal a part of the Parque Tres de Febrero. This bronze bust funded by public subscription was unveiled in 1927.

In 1960 the official conservatory in Banfield was named Julián Aguirre. This honored his memory. It recognized him as an illustrious Argentine composer. As you stand before this bust consider the impact Julián Aguirre had. He helped shape Argentine musical identity. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and music lovers today.
