Observe the quiet stones before you. They stand as silent witnesses in the Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf. This is a place of respect and remembrance. It is a testament to the Jewish community that once thrived here.

The Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf was established in 1883. Before that, the Jewish community in Mondorf buried their dead elsewhere. This final resting place is located on Lerchenstraße. It is near the Bergheim industrial area.

Take a moment to appreciate the brick wall surrounding us. It encloses this sacred ground. The wall offers a sense of protection and privacy. The entrance you see now wasn’t always here. The original entrance was on the west side. In 1937, a land consolidation led to its relocation.

Notice the steel gate. The Cologne sculptor Rudolf Peer designed it in 1981. Peer integrated a Menorah into the gate’s design. The Menorah is a seven-branched candelabrum. It is an important symbol in Judaism.

This Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf spans 465 square meters. Though small it holds immense significance. Look around and you will see 46 headstones. The oldest dates back to 1891. The last burial took place on January 28, 1940.

The Jewish community in Mondorf dates back to the early 19th century. Mondorf held the community’s facilities. This was despite more Jews living in neighboring Rheidt.

Around 1880, the community numbered about 25 people. By 1932, it had dwindled to 20. The Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf served not only Mondorf. It also served the Jewish residents of Rheidt and the Sieglar district.

Consider the history etched into these stones. The names and dates represent lives. They represent families and a vibrant community. The text on the headstones tells stories.

In 1989 students from the Lülskorf Hauptschule planted twelve пирамида white beeches. They were planted to commemorate families belonging to the synagogue community. This act of remembrance adds another layer to this space.

Jewish tradition holds the sanctity of the dead in high regard. Graves and memorials remain untouched for centuries. It is a custom to place small stones on the headstones. This shows respect for the deceased.

Today the Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf is well-maintained. Though the entrance is often locked it is possible to see parts of it. A sign provides information about the cemetery and the synagogue community.

The sign reads: “Mondorf – Jewish Cemetery. On the burial ground of the Mondorf Synagogue community, established in 1883, the deceased Jewish inhabitants from Rheidt and Mondorf were buried.”

The Mondorf Synagogue community no longer exists. Most Jews deported in the summer of 1942 did not survive the Holocaust. Few who could flee returned.

The Jüdischer Friedhof Mondorf stands as a reminder. It reminds us of the fragility of community and the importance of remembrance. Let us honor those who rest here. Let us remember their stories.
