“An der Eisenbahn” is more than just an address. It marks the location of the Jüdischer Friedhof Achim. This cemetery is a testament to Achim’s Jewish community. It serves as a reminder of their history.

Established in 1865 the Jüdischer Friedhof Achim provided a final resting place. Before its creation, Jewish residents had to transport their dead to Hoyerhagen or Hastedt. These locations were about 30 kilometers away. The long journey was difficult for those in mourning.

Jacob Moses Alexander understood this burden. He was the Achim Synagogue leader. In 1865, he sought permission from the Stade government to create a local cemetery. Agreement was quickly reached. The owner of the land Cord Puvogel was ready to sell. Permission was granted in November 1865. The conditions were simple. The site should be fenced. It should be open to all Jews in the Achim area.

The Jüdischer Friedhof Achim covers around 1,000 square meters. It provided a dedicated space for burials. The first burial likely took place in 1867. The last gravestone dates back to 1935. Between those years, at least 61 members of the Achim Synagogue community were buried here.

Tragedy struck during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938. The Jüdischer Friedhof Achim was severely damaged. In 1942, plans arose to turn the cemetery back into farmland. Thankfully, this never happened. The Reich Security Main Office wanted to assess the value of the gravestones first. The war ended in 1945 before this assessment took place. The Jüdischer Friedhof Achim fell into disrepair until 2002.

After World War I, a war memorial was erected. It honored the fallen members of the community. Today 56 gravestones stand. These stones mark the resting places of individuals from Achim and the surrounding areas. They passed away between 1867 and 1935.

The gravestones themselves tell stories. They reflect the styles of their time. Many are simple tablets. Inscriptions include names, dates of birth, and death. Hebrew phrases or texts in both Hebrew and German can also be found.

Efforts were made to restore the Jüdischer Friedhof Achim. Jewish organizations worked to repair the damage. They sought justice for the desecration. By 1956, restoration was complete. Today, the cemetery is no longer accessible. This protects it from further desecration.

The Jüdischer Friedhof Achim is a protected cultural monument. In September 2010, an exhibition in Achim Town Hall provided information about the cemetery. The Jüdischer Friedhof Achim stands as a place of memory. It is a reminder of the lives and history of Achim’s Jewish community. It serves as a place of reflection.
