The Synagoge Dresden has a history. Gottfried Semper built the first Synagogue from 1838 to 1840. During Reichspogromnacht in 1938, it was destroyed. The new Synagogue’s first groundbreaking was November 9, 1998. This was exactly 60 years after its destruction. The new Synagogue was consecrated on November 9, 2001. It stands near its original location. This location is on Hasenberg. It is between Bärenzwinger and Carolabrücke.

The Jüdische Gemeinde Dresden looks back on over 160 years of history. With the consecration of the new Synagogue, the Jüdische Gemeinde Dresden no longer had to wait for a new house of worship. For 50 years, it had made do with a temporary solution.

The reconstruction of the Synagogue Dresden was financed through public funds. Generous donations also helped. The building continues to receive support even after its dedication in 2001.

The Jüdische Kultusgemeinde Dresden is more than just a religious institution. It includes many facilities. A library is located on Hasenberg 1. There is also a gallery at this address. Makkabi Dresden e.V. also calls Hasenberg 1 home. The theater group “Schule von Salomon Plar” and the choir “Siman Tov” enrich the community. The Synagogenchor also performs. The Jüdische Kulturtage hosts a Yiddish music and theater week. A job exchange operates at Hasenberg 1. “Schalom,” a youth center, is located here. A weekly senior citizens’ meeting is held at Hasenberg 1. The community publishes a newspaper called “Gemeindeblatt”.

Rabbi Alexander Nachama serves the Jüdische Kultusgemeinde Dresden. He is based at Hasenberg 1. His orientation is conservative. He also provides instruction.

Dr. Nora Goldenbogen served Jewish communities in Dresden. She also served all of Saxony. Her dedication spanned many years. The Jewish community mourns her passing. Her memory is a blessing.
