How about a story of resilience etched in stone? Here before us stands the Judas-Thaddäus-Kapelle. This chapel isn’t just a building. It is a testament to faith and community spirit.
The Judas-Thaddäus-Kapelle sits in Alfter’s Birrekoven district. Its story began in 1934. Karl Schmitz a local seed merchant commissioned it. Barthel Vianden from Birrekoven gifted the land. Wilhelm Schmitz a master mason oversaw the construction. The chapel is built from dark lava stone. This stone comes from the Siebengebirge hills.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 1997 fire struck the Judas-Thaddäus-Kapelle. It was a devastating blow. Yet the community rallied. They rebuilt their beloved chapel.
The chapel is dedicated to Saint Judas Thaddäus. Many know him as the patron saint of desperate cases. Inside people find solace. They light candles and offer prayers. The many burning tea lights are a sign of the Saint’s popularity.
Interestingly the chapel nearly didn’t get its roof repaired. Time took its toll. The old shingles became loose. They posed a danger to visitors. A new roof cost around 12000 Euro. The community was called upon to donate for the repairs.
