This plaque honors Joseph Epstein, known as Colonel Gilles, a resistance fighter during World War II. He was a Polish Jew who fought against the Nazis. He was the leader of the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP) in the Paris region. In 1943 he devised a new tactic of guerrilla warfare, using larger groups of fighters rather than small teams. This tactic was a success, but it also put his fighters at greater risk. He was arrested in 1943 and tortured by the Gestapo. He never gave up his comrades’ names, even under torture. He was executed at Fort Mont-Valérien on April 11, 1944. The plaque was erected in 2018, on the building where he once lived. It serves as a reminder of his bravery and sacrifice.
