Across the Jose Rizal Bridge we stand. Its steel arches whisper tales of Seattle’s past. This isn’t just any bridge. The Jose Rizal Bridge connects Seattle’s International District to Beacon Hill. Built in 1911 it was originally known as the 12th Avenue South Bridge or the Dearborn Street Bridge. It was one of Seattle’s first permanent steel bridges a testament to engineering prowess of its time.

Notice the floodlights illuminating the Jose Rizal Bridge at night. This wasn’t always the case. Thanks to Paul Schell’s Seattle Millennium Project the bridge now enjoys this dramatic nighttime glow. Imagine the scene the lights reflecting in the waters below. The bridge’s elegant design is even more stunning at night.

But the Jose Rizal Bridge holds more than just structural significance. In 1974 it was renamed to honor Jose Rizal a Filipino patriot. Though many Seattleites may not know its official name its true identity is rich in history. It represents a bridge not just between neighborhoods but also between cultures.

Sadly the Jose Rizal Bridge also witnessed a tragic event. In 2002 a police informant was found murdered near a homeless encampment under the bridge. The incident casts a shadow on its otherwise inspiring history. It reminds us of the complexities of urban life.

In 2021 changes occurred. The four lanes of traffic were reduced to two. This created space for protected bike lanes. It shows Seattle’s commitment to modern infrastructure and sustainability. The changes reflect a city that adapts to the changing times. It continues to serve the community in new ways.

The Jose Rizal Bridge stands tall. It silently observes the ebb and flow of life. It stands as a symbol of progress connection and the enduring spirit of Seattle. It is more than just a route to cross. It’s a piece of Seattle’s history. It’s a bridge to the past and a pathway to the future. Let’s appreciate its story.
