Established in 1925 the Jose Fabella Memorial School stands proudly. It began as the Welfareville School a vital part of the Welfareville Institutions. These institutions cared for orphans neglected and vulnerable children. They also provided for the mentally disabled and the elderly. The school was integral to this complex. It offered education and vocational training to its young residents.
The Welfareville School wasn’t just a school. It was a haven a place of hope amidst difficult circumstances. Imagine the children. They came from various backgrounds. Some were orphans. Some were abandoned. Many faced immense challenges. Yet within the school’s walls they found a sense of community. They received an education. This education gave them a fighting chance.
For years the school carried the name Welfareville. This name bore a stigma. It implied a place for society’s rejects. People wanted a change. They wanted a name that reflected the school’s true purpose. They wanted a name that honored its work.
On June 21 1963 that change arrived. Republic Act No 3576 was passed. This act renamed the Welfareville School. It became the Jose Fabella Memorial School. This was a fitting tribute. Dr Jose Fabella was the first Commissioner of the Bureau of Public Welfare. He is considered the Father of Public Health and Social Welfare in the Philippines. His vision laid the groundwork for the Welfareville Institutions.
The Jose Fabella Memorial School’s legacy goes beyond its name. It’s a testament to perseverance. It’s a symbol of hope for children in need. It has expanded significantly. It now offers education from kindergarten to senior high school. It also includes special education units. These units serve learners with a range of special needs. The school boasts a vast network of satellite units throughout Metro Manila and Rizal.
Today the Jose Fabella Memorial School continues its vital mission. It provides education and support to countless children. It honors Dr Fabella’s legacy of compassion. It remains a beacon of hope. It’s a testament to the power of education to transform lives. It’s more than just a school. It’s a community. It’s a history of hope. It’s a future of opportunity. It’s the Jose Fabella Memorial School.
