“A duel on the Paraná River? At sixteen?” I ask, watching your eyebrows rise in surprise. We’re standing on the edge of José C. Paz, a city named after a man whose life was as dramatic as a tango. José Clemente Paz, born in Buenos Aires in 1842, was no stranger to conflict. Imagine young Paz, barely a man, shouting “Viva Buenos Aires!” as Admiral Murature’s squadron attempted to pass Rosario. The Rosario soldiers opened fire, forcing the young Paz to plunge into the Paraná. He swam for his life, reaching the Buenos Aires ships and returning to the city of his birth, a hero in the making. José C. Paz, the man, was a blend of passion and pragmatism. He was a soldier, fighting bravely at the Battle of Pavón. He was a politician, working alongside Adolfo Alsina. He was a journalist, founding the influential newspaper “La Prensa” in 1869. José C. Paz understood the power of the press. “La Prensa” became a voice for the people, a platform for his ideals. He even commissioned a magnificent palace in Buenos Aires, designed by French architect Louis Sortais. The Palacio Paz, a testament to his ambition, was meant to be a presidential palace. Sadly, he died in Monaco in 1912 before its completion and before realizing his presidential aspirations. His legacy, however, continues to resonate in José C. Paz, the city that bears his name, and in the grand Palacio Paz, now the Círculo Militar. José C. Paz’s life was a whirlwind of action and achievement. He was a man who dared to dream, who fought for his beliefs, and who left an indelible mark on Argentina.
