What secrets does a house hold? Jónhús, here in Copenhagen, whispers tales of a remarkable Icelander. Jón Sigurðsson, Iceland’s national hero, called this house his home. He lived here with his wife, Ingibjörg Einarsdóttir, from 1852 until his death in 1879. Jónhús isn’t just a house. It’s a cultural center, a museum, a library, and a meeting place. It stands at the corner of Øster Voldgade and Stokhusgade. Icelanders sometimes refer to this street as Austurvegg. Inside Jónhús, you can explore an exhibit about Jón Sigurðsson’s life and work. A library dedicated to Icelandic literature and history also resides within these walls. The house itself is a piece of history. It was gifted to the Icelandic parliament by Carl Sæmundsen in 1966. Jónhús continues to be a vibrant hub for the Icelandic community in Copenhagen. Various cultural events and gatherings are held here. You can even see a sign outside that reads: “Jón Sigurðsson lived here from the autumn of 1852 and died here in 1879. ‘Iceland’s noble son, sun of her hope, sword and shield.'” Jónhús offers a unique glimpse into the life of a man who shaped Iceland’s destiny. It also symbolizes the strong connection between Iceland and Denmark.
