“Lost in the city, a green gem awaits.” That’s John McLaren Park for you, a sprawling 312-acre wonderland nestled in southeastern San Francisco. It’s the third largest park in the city, overshadowed only by Golden Gate Park and the Presidio. John McLaren Park is a place where the city’s hustle fades, replaced by the rustling of leaves and birdsong. John McLaren, the visionary behind Golden Gate Park, also lent his name and expertise to this park. Dedicated to him in 1927, the park carries his legacy of creating urban oases. Initially, the city envisioned a 550-acre park, a grand project that included an 18-hole golf course and even plans to relocate the City Zoo. Sadly, a bond measure failed in 1928, shrinking the park’s footprint to its current size. Despite this setback, John McLaren Park blossomed, becoming a haven for nature lovers and those seeking respite from city life. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) left its mark in the 1930s, constructing the scenic drive that winds through the park. At one time, you could even enjoy equestrian trails here. Now, hikers can traverse over seven miles of trails, including the unique Philosopher’s Way. This 2.7-mile loop, dotted with 14 “musing stations,” offers stunning views and food for thought. John McLaren Park boasts a diverse landscape, from playgrounds like Herz and Louis Sutter, to the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, named after the Grateful Dead icon who grew up nearby. McNab Lake offers a tranquil setting, and the Gleneagles Golf Course provides a challenge for enthusiasts. Even La Grande Tank, a prominent water tank visible from miles away, adds to the park’s unique character.
