Can you imagine a hospital transforming into a wellness center? Right here at the John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center, that’s exactly what happened. The John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center, nestled within the Meralco compound in Pasig, has a fascinating history. It began as the John F. Cotton Hospital in 1964, serving as the healthcare custodian for Meralco employees for 40 years. The John F. Cotton Hospital offered tertiary care, meeting the diverse medical needs of the company’s workforce. In 2003, its value was estimated at P5,519,190. But a shift occurred. In 2004, Manuel M. Lopez, Meralco’s chairman and CEO, spearheaded a transformation. His vision, inspired by his father Eugenio Lopez, Sr., the first Filipino owner of Meralco, was to prioritize preventative care over reactive treatment. This made Meralco the first company in the Philippines to implement such a program. On September 16, 2004, the John F. Cotton Hospital officially became the John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center. The new Corporate Wellness Center building was inaugurated on July 20, 2005. This wasn’t just a name change. The John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center partnered with The Medical City for inpatient services. This allowed the center to focus on preventative health programs, ultimately lowering healthcare costs and boosting productivity. The center provides a range of services including diagnostic tools, X-ray equipment, a clinical laboratory, and a fitness center. Meralco also operates 42 canteens across its franchise area, emphasizing healthy eating. The John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center emphasizes a holistic approach. It addresses physical, nutritional, emotional, psychological, social, and even spiritual well-being. A dedicated core care team coordinates the delivery of these integrated wellness programs. This team is led by Dr. Efren R. Vicaldo, who also heads the Congenital Heart Disease section of the Philippine Heart Center and the Cardiology section of the FEU NRMF Medical Center. The medical director is Dr. Angelito P. Obillo, and another administrator is Dr. Rafael B. Agra. The John F. Cotton Corporate Wellness Center stands as a testament to Meralco’s commitment to its employees’ well-being, a legacy extending from its hospital roots to its modern focus on preventative care.
