Tucked away on Zanderstraße, the Johanneskirche beckons. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story whispered through time, etched in stone and stained glass. The Johanneskirche isn’t merely a building. It’s a living testament to the resilience of faith, a beacon that guided a community through the tumultuous aftermath of war. Built in 1952, the Johanneskirche became the heart of Protestant life in the Hardtberg district. Imagine Bonn, scarred by war, slowly rebuilding. The Johanneskirche rose amidst the rubble, a symbol of hope and renewal. This church served a wide area. It encompassed parts of Alfter and Bonn-Röttgen, Ückesdorf, Medinghoven, Lengsdorf, and Bräser Berg. The Johanneskirche even offered services such as baptisms, weddings, confirmations, preaching, and pastoral care. Over time, the community grew and evolved. In 2007, the districts of Röttgen-Ückesdorf and Witterschlick-Oedekoven formed their own parish. They became the Evangelical Church Community am Kottenforst. Yet, the ties to the Johanneskirche remained strong. They maintained contact through regular pastoral meetings and shared services. One such tradition is the joint Pentecost Monday service at the Witterschlick barbecue area. Another is the exchange of pulpits between Thomaskirche and Johanneskirche on Christmas Day. The Johanneskirche continued to adapt to the needs of its community. In 2015, it underwent another division. This created the Evangelical Church Community Hardtberg. Despite the changes, strong connections persist between these congregations. Today, the Johanneskirche stands as part of an ensemble. It includes a parish hall, rectory, and kindergarten. Located on Bahnhofstraße, it borders Lessenich. Around 20 people work within this complex, dedicated to serving the community. The kindergarten, affectionately called Joki-Familienhaus, is a state-certified family center. It’s supported by two organizations: the Joki-Förderverein Kinder- und Jugendarbeit e.V. and the Kirchbauverein Evangelische Johanniskirche Bonn-Duisdorf e.V. Their support is invaluable. The Johanneskirche continues its mission. It serves as a place of worship, a center for community activities, and a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
