Didn’t Johann Peter Hebel spend many years in Karlsruhe? He did. The Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal honors this important figure. It stands as a tribute to his life and work.
The Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal is in the Schlossgarten. This location is a few meters northwest of the Karlsruhe Castle. The Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal is one of the oldest monuments to the poet.
The bust of Hebel is bronze. It stands on an iron base. Friedolin Fechtig created the bust in 1835. The bust shows the poet as Hermes. He wears a gold laurel wreath. Locals surround the bust. They are winding wreaths. An octagonal grid frames the base.
Joseph Berckmüller planned the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal. He designed it in the neo-Gothic style. A private association funded it.
In 1835, the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal stood at the Botanical Garden’s northern entrance. It moved in 1965. Now it stands in its current location. Restorations occurred from 1966 to 1967. Further work happened from 1974 to 1975.
The front of the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Denkmal reads: “Joh. Peter Hebel, born May 10, 1760, died Sept. 22, 1826. To the patriotic poet, erected under Grand Duke Leopold’s reign by his friends and admirers, 1835.” The backside says: “Immer bleibet dir Namen und Ehr und ewiger Nachruhm Virgil”.
The left side displays a quote. It translates to: “and when you stand at a crossroads and don’t know where to go, stop and ask your conscience first, it can thankfully speak German and follow its advice.” The right side shows another quote. It translates to: “and however dark and gloomy it may be, the stars shine so happily and their light comes from home. How lovely it must be at home.”
These inscriptions reflect Hebel’s wisdom. They also show his connection to home. Hebel worked as a teacher. He also served as a school principal. He was an editor in Karlsruhe. He even preached at the court of Margrave Karl Friedrich. Karlsruhe honored him soon after his death in 1826.
