Did the Walsers know they were making history when they commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design their home? Here at 42 North Central Avenue stands the JJ. Walser House, a testament to Wright’s Prairie School style. This house, built in 1903, stands as a unique piece of Chicago’s architectural history. The JJ. Walser House was built for Joseph Jacob Walser Jr., a real estate developer, and his wife, Grace. They purchased this lot on Central Avenue, which was surprisingly undeveloped at the time despite its proximity to a bustling elevated train station. The Walsers had grown up nearby, and Joseph’s father, Jacob Walser Sr., still lived just a block north. This connection to the area makes the JJ. Walser House even more significant. The house cost $4,000 to build, a considerable sum in 1903. It was completed by the end of that year, showcasing Wright’s innovative design. The two-story home, with its cruciform shape, is a classic example of Prairie School architecture. Its low-pitched hipped roof, deep eaves, and horizontal band of windows are all signature Wright elements. The exterior, primarily white stucco with dark wood trim, stands in stark contrast to the multi-family dwellings that now surround it. Originally, the JJ. Walser House had open porches on either side of the main block. These were later enclosed, altering the original design but still maintaining the essence of Wright’s vision. Interestingly, the main entrance is tucked away on the west side, hidden from the street, a common feature in Wright’s residential designs. The Walsers only lived in the house for seven years. In 1910, they moved just six blocks east, and the house was sold to George Donnersberger. It has changed hands many times since then, but remarkably, it has been with the Teague family since 1970. Their long ownership speaks to the enduring appeal of Wright’s design. The JJ. Walser House gained recognition as a Chicago Landmark in 1984 and was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. This house is more than just a building. It represents a moment in time, a connection to Chicago’s past, and the enduring legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright. It reminds us that even in a changing urban landscape, architectural treasures can endure, telling their stories to those who take the time to listen.
