A vast expanse of mud and water greets you. This is Jiuduansha Wetland National Nature Reserve. It’s a unique ecosystem. It’s located at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

For centuries this area was part of a larger shoal. Then floods in 1949 and 1954 changed everything. They created a series of troughs. Jiuduansha separated from the Tongsha shoal. This created the wetland we see today.

Shanghai’s universities began studying Jiuduansha in the 1990s. Scientists noticed a problem. Sedimentation was drastically reduced. Many dams along the Yangtze River caused this. The wetland was destabilizing.

In 1995 a solution was introduced. Scientists planted cordgrass. The goal was to stabilize the shoals. It worked but it also created another problem. The cordgrass spread too quickly. It became invasive crowding out native plants.

Despite this Jiuduansha is incredibly important. It is a vital habitat for countless bird species. A 1996 study showed that the number of certain bird species here exceeded 1% of the world’s total. This makes Jiuduansha a Wetland of International Importance.

The reserve supports a huge variety of life. There are over 200 bird species. There are also 131 kinds of fish. Aquatic mammals such as cowfish dolphins and seals live in its waters.

Jiuduansha’s story is one of transformation. It shows both the power of nature and the impact of human intervention. It’s a reminder of the delicate balance of ecosystems and the ongoing efforts to protect this precious place. The reserve is a testament to the dedication of researchers and conservationists. Their work ensures that Jiuduansha will continue to thrive. A wetland museum is planned. It will increase public awareness and support for conservation. The Jiuduansha Wetland National Nature Reserve is a place of wonder. It’s a critical part of Shanghai’s natural heritage.
