Contemplate the Peace Bell. Its deep resonant tone invites calm reflection here at Jing’an Temple. This temple is an oasis of tranquility amidst Shanghai’s bustling heart. Welcome to Jing’an Temple.

Jing’an Temple is one of Shanghai’s oldest and most renowned temples. Its history stretches back nearly a thousand years. Originally built in the early Song Dynasty, Jing’an Temple offers a serene escape. It stands proudly in the heart of the city.

Did you know Jing’an Temple’s construction cost was approximately 2.8 billion RMB? This demonstrates its deep-rooted cultural significance. The temple’s ambiance allows visitors to escape everyday stresses. Here you can connect with inner peace.

Let’s delve into Jing’an Temple’s history. It dates back to 247 AD during the Three Kingdoms period. Back then, it was known as Hudu Chongyuan Temple. In 1008, during the Song Dynasty, the temple was renamed Jing’an Temple. By 1216, it moved to its current location on Nanjing West Road. This predates the establishment of Shanghai.

In 1880, after the main hall collapsed, the temple was reconstructed. This established the annual temple fair on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. During the Republic of China era, Jing’an Temple became the headquarters of the Chinese Buddhist Association. It underwent several repairs and expansions after World War II.

Now let’s explore the key sights within Jing’an Temple. The Dharma Hall stands directly north of the main hall. This seven-story structure is 32.22 meters high. It was built from imported Burmese teak. Its copper-tiled roof embodies the architectural style of the Song Dynasty. Intricate roof decorations feature mythological animals. Buddhist symbols like elephants, dharma wheels, and lotus flowers adorn the hall.

Consider the Mountain Gate. It is a two-story structure with an upper level. The Ten Kings Hall is below. Granite clads the gate’s exterior. Teak wood and a yellow glazed-tile roof complete the look. “Perpetual Dharma” is inscribed on the roof ridge. This represents Buddha’s eternal teachings.

The Bell Tower houses the “Peace Bell.” This bronze creation measures 3.3 meters high. It weighs 7.3 tons. The lower level hosts the “Spring Well.” It’s one of the “Eight Views of Jing’an.” Known as “The Sixth Spring Under Heaven,” it draws water from a 156-meter deep well.

The Guanyin Hall is in the eastern wing. It houses a majestic statue of the bodhisattva Guanyin. This statue is carved from a single piece of camphor wood. The Muni Hall stands in the western wing. It enshrines a statue of the Buddha Muni. This statue is carved from pure white jade.

The Mahavira Hall is a grand structure measuring 26 meters in height. Forty-six meticulously carved teak pillars support it. A 15-ton solid silver statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands inside.

Finally, observe the Jing’an Pagoda. This seven-story structure reflects ancient Chinese architectural styles. The tower’s bronze structure is plated with gold leaf.

Jing’an Temple stands as a testament to history and spirituality. Take a moment to reflect on its enduring legacy. Consider the tranquility it offers amidst Shanghai’s modern bustle.
