Ever wonder what it’s like to step into the world of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force? The JGSDF Public Information Center, affectionately known as Rikkunland, offers a unique glimpse. This isn’t your typical museum. The JGSDF Public Information Center is a vibrant hub designed to educate and inspire, showcasing the history, equipment, and mission of the JGSDF. Rikkunland opened its doors in 2002, nestled beside Camp Asaka in Saitama Prefecture, a short trip from Tokyo. The center has welcomed over two million visitors, eager to explore its fascinating exhibits. Inside the JGSDF Public Information Center, a world of military might unfolds. The star attraction? The Fuji AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter, a formidable gunship. Visitors can examine its weaponry up close, from TOW anti-tank missiles to the 20mm Gatling gun. And on special “open cockpit” days, you can even sit in the pilot’s seat! Not to be outdone, the Type 90 Main Battle Tank stands ready, its 120mm gun aimed towards the Cobra. Nearby, a simulator lets you experience what it’s like to target through the tank’s periscope. The JGSDF Public Information Center also showcases the life of a soldier. Mannequins display uniforms and equipment. You can even try on weighted backpacks and flak jackets to feel the heft of a soldier’s load. And don’t forget the rations! From curry bonito to miso mackerel, the variety is impressive. Outside, the exhibits continue. A Type 10 MBT, Type 74 MBT, armored personnel carriers, and artillery pieces are on display. You can even descend into a claustrophobic underground command bunker. Rikkunland offers more than just static displays. A 3D theater screens films about the JGSDF, and a helicopter simulator lets you feel the motion of a chopper in flight. Want to truly immerse yourself? Rent a uniform and stroll among the exhibits, posing for photos with the hardware. The JGSDF Public Information Center is a testament to Japan’s innovative approach to public engagement. It’s a place where history comes alive, technology engages, and the future of defense is explored. So, next time you’re in Tokyo, make the trip to Rikkunland. You won’t be disappointed.
