Come with me and let’s step onto the green expanse of Jesse Owens Park, a vibrant hub of activity and history nestled in Chicago’s South Calumet community. Imagine a place where the spirit of athletic excellence and community spirit converge, all named in honor of a man who shattered records and prejudices on the world’s stage.

Jesse Owens Park, originally known as Stony Island Park, has been a cornerstone of this neighborhood for decades. After the bustling post-World War II development, the Chicago Park District established this park to meet the growing need for recreation. Over 17 acres were acquired from 1947 to 1950, and the park was expanded in 1955. The District built a recreation building, a spray pool, and ball fields throughout the 1950s. But it was in the 1980s that the park took on a new and fitting significance. The Women’s Committee for a Chicago Black Athletic Hall of Fame, the 87th Street Businessman’s Association, and park district vice-president Margaret T. Burroughs rallied to rename the park after the legendary athlete, Jesse Owens.

Owens, an African-American born in 1913, would later win four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, defeating Nazi notions of racial superiority. He was a symbol of hope and athletic achievement, and the park now bears his name with pride. This isn’t just a park; it’s a testament to Owens’ enduring legacy.

Today, Jesse Owens Park is a bustling place that embodies both athletic prowess and community spirit. The fieldhouse, completed in 2009, offers a gymnasium, fitness center, and multi-purpose rooms. It’s a green gem, featuring a nature garden, rooftop garden, and solar panels. Outside, the park is a playground for all ages, with four ball diamonds, a multi-purpose field, tennis courts, and an Olympic-themed playground, complete with mosaic art and equipment reflecting the Olympic colors and themes. There’s even a water feature that cools off park-goers during the summer months. Jesse Owens Park offers a place for all ages to reconnect with nature, engage in fitness, or simply enjoy the serenity of the outdoors, all while honoring the legacy of a true champion.
