Question: What if these red bricks could talk? Jerusalem Church, the main church of the Methodist community in Denmark, stands before us. It has stood here in central Copenhagen since 1915.

Jerusalem Church replaced an earlier church. Missionaries founded the congregation in 1859. The first church, then called St. Paul’s Church, was completed in 1866. However, a fire destroyed it in 1914.

The current Jerusalem Church has a slightly larger design. Jens Christian Kofoed designed it. The reinauguration took place the following year after its construction in 1915.

Notice the blend of Romanesque Revival and Byzantine Revival styles. The red-brick facade is striking. The tower reaches 50.6 meters. It dominates the skyline.

The church was originally known as St. Paul’s Church. In 1894, the nearby St. Paul’s Church took over that name. This church then became St. Mark’s Church until 1912. Finally, it received its current name: Jerusalem Church.

Consider the small four-story building next to Jerusalem Church. Built in 1866, it now houses the church office.

Step inside Jerusalem Church, if you have the chance. An organ built in 1916 awaits. It was restored in 1982–84. The church boasts the largest original romantic organ in Denmark.

Also, Jerusalem Church is known for its gospel music. Three choirs fill the church with song. Kefas has existed since 1976. Saints and Sinners formed in 1994. Revelation Gospel Choir is the youngest.

Look up at the tower. It ends in a spire. The spire features symbols: a star, a cross, and a lily. These reach towards the heavens.

Jerusalem Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant center of faith. It is a place of music and community. It is a testament to resilience. A fire couldn’t destroy it.
