Before you stands a testament to a man whose words continue to tickle funny bones. This is the Jerome K. Jerome Blue plaque. It marks a place where Jerome K. Jerome lived. It’s a tribute to his literary genius.

Jerome K. Jerome. The name itself rolls off the tongue with a hint of whimsy. He was born Jerome Clapp Jerome on May 2nd 1859. Walsall Staffordshire was his birthplace. He later adopted Klapka as his middle name. Some say he was named after General George Klapka. The truth remains somewhat shrouded in mystery.

Jerome’s early life wasn’t always laughter and light. At 14 he left school to work. He tried his hand at many jobs. He was a railway clerk. He was a schoolteacher. He was an actor. He was a journalist. Each role shaped the writer he would become.

His first book appeared in 1885. It was called “On the Stage and Off”. However it was “Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow” in 1886 that brought success.

But it was “Three Men in a Boat” published in 1889 that secured his legacy. The book tells the story of three friends. They journey down the River Thames with a dog. The characters were based on his friends George Wingrave and Carl Hentschel. It is filled with humorous observations. The book has never been out of print. “Three Men in a Boat” made the River Thames a tourist attraction.

From 1892 to 1897 he co-edited “The Idler” magazine. Robert Barr and George Brown Burgin were his co-editors. Writers like Mark Twain contributed.

Jerome wrote many other works. These include “Three Men on the Bummel” and “Paul Kelver”. He also wrote plays. His memoirs “My Life and Times” came out in 1926.

Jerome K. Jerome died on June 14 1927 in Northampton. He was 68 years old. He is buried in Ewelme Oxfordshire.
