Jeppe High School for Boys is more than just a school. It is Johannesburg’s oldest public school established in 1890. Its story began with St Michael’s College. The Witwatersrand Council of Education bought the college in 1897. It became Jeppestown Grammar School.

After the Anglo-Boer War it re-opened as Jeppestown High School for Boys and Girls. Sir Julius Jeppe donated land. This act allowed the family name to be associated with the school. By 1919 the boys outnumbered the girls. The girls moved creating Jeppe High School for Boys.

The school’s motto resonates deeply. Forti nihil difficilius meaning “Nothing is too difficult for the brave”. This ethos is woven into the very fabric of Jeppe High School for Boys.

Look around. The main building and First World War Memorial were declared national monuments in 1986. The dome near the entrance serves as both a recruitment area and a museum. Plaques honor former pupils who died in action.

The Payne Hall stands as a testament to history. It is a stone building with a wooden interior. It is named after James Humphrey Allen Payne. He was a headmaster who died while serving in World War I.

Notice the hostels around us. Oribi House built in 1912 is the oldest. Tsessebe House later named Sable House was once Friedenheim. It was Sir Julius Jeppe’s home. It even served as British Headquarters during the Anglo-Boer War.
