Can a house whisper secrets of resistance? Here at the Jens-Jessen-Haus, the walls hold echoes of defiance. The Jens-Jessen-Haus isn’t just a beautiful Art Nouveau villa. It’s a tribute to a man who dared to challenge the darkest chapter of German history. The Jens-Jessen-Haus, built in 1903-1904 for Kommerzienrätin Ida Hansen, stands as a testament to the elegance of the era. Designed by architect Gustav Willrath, this striking villa boasts distinctive half-timbered elements and decorative embellishments. Notice the inscription above the south-facing door: “Den Ein- und Ausgang Gott bewacht” (God guards the entrance and exit). Inside, a vibrant Art Nouveau stained-glass window in the stairwell depicts the Gertruyde windmill. This windmill originally stood near the Altes Gymnasium before being moved. The Jens-Jessen-Haus has a fascinating connection to the nearby Altes Gymnasium. The villa served as an extension of the school from 1982 to 2007. It was during this time that it was renamed in honor of Jens Jessen, a former student. Jessen, born in 1895, studied economics and became a professor. Initially a supporter of the Nazi regime, he later joined the resistance. His office became a hub for clandestine meetings, facilitating the movement of key figures. The plaque on the Jens-Jessen-Haus tells a poignant story. It commemorates Jessen’s bravery, his execution at Plötzensee prison in 1944 for his role in the plot against Hitler. While Jessen never lived in this house, its name serves as a powerful reminder of his sacrifice. The Jens-Jessen-Haus stands as more than just a historical landmark. It’s a testament to courage, resilience, and the enduring spirit of resistance. Look closely, and you might just hear the whispers of history.
