Jurong East Mall, or JEM as it’s more commonly known, isn’t just a shopping mall. It’s a testament to Singapore’s ever-evolving landscape. JEM stands tall in Jurong East, connected directly to the Jurong East MRT station. Imagine, right at this spot, where thousands of people pass through daily, stands this retail giant. JEM officially opened its doors on June 15, 2013. However, the path to its grand opening wasn’t without its hiccups. Initially slated to open on June 11, 2013, some tenancy permit issues caused a slight delay. But the wait was worth it. Over 10,000 eager shoppers flocked to JEM within the first hour of its opening. JEM boasts an impressive 818,000 square feet of retail space. Spread across six levels, it houses a staggering 241 shops and nine anchor tenants. This makes JEM the third-largest suburban mall in Singapore. Think about that for a moment. A place where you can find everything from fashion and electronics to groceries and entertainment, all under one roof. And the name itself, JEM, is a clever abbreviation of Jurong East Mall, but it’s also meant to evoke the image of a “crown jewel” of Jurong and western Singapore. Over the years, JEM has adapted and evolved. In 2019, the basement level underwent renovations. A major shift happened in 2020 when the Robinsons department store closed its doors. In its place, IKEA opened its first small-store concept in Southeast Asia in 2021. This unique IKEA, right here in JEM, doesn’t have a children’s playground or a built-in warehouse, offering a different shopping experience than larger IKEA locations. JEM truly stands as a symbol of Singapore’s dynamic retail landscape.
