In the mid-1800s, a determined cattle grazier named Joseph Jell roamed these very lands. His legacy lives on in Jells Park. This 127-hectare park, a testament to his time, officially opened its gates on April 30, 1976. Jells Park welcomes over 900,000 visitors annually. They come to explore its diverse landscapes and recreational offerings.

Jells Park sits on the western bank of the Dandenong Creek. It’s a key part of the Dandenong Creek wildlife corridor. The park features a mix of revegetated areas and significant bushland. This bushland contributes to its rich biodiversity. Within this expansive park, you’ll find an impressive 9 kilometers of paths. These paths cater to walkers and cyclists alike. They include the Scotchmans Creek Trail, the EastLink Trail, and the Dandenong Creek Trail. The Dandenong Creek Trail even connects to the Blind Creek Trail, extending your exploration options.

The heart of Jells Park is the man-made Jells Lake. Two jetties extend into the lake, offering spots for recreational fishing. Keep an eye out for the European carp. They are abundant in the lake, but also a concern for the lake’s biodiversity. Northwest of the lake is a perfect spot for picnics. A blanket of grass invites you to relax and enjoy the views. The remaining perimeter of Jells Lake is framed by remnant bushland. Tucked away within this bushland is a bird hide. It provides a perfect vantage point for observing native bird species. You might spot Australasian swamphens, pelicans, Eurasian coots, dusky moorhens, and various ducks.

Jells Park also features designated picnic areas with varying amenities. Some offer barbecues, shelters, and parking, while others are simpler, grassy expanses. Playgrounds at Yabby Hill provide entertainment for children. A visitor center in the northwest corner of the park offers information and a cafe. For sports enthusiasts, two ovals in the south are often used for activities but are open to the public when not booked. Jells Park offers a blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and historical significance, making it a worthwhile destination.
