Long ago, before the rumble of the ‘L’ train and the whoosh of cars on the Kennedy Expressway, Jefferson Park was a quiet haven known as Sand Ridge. Native American trails crisscrossed this area. These trails served as the first pathways. One notable trail even followed the ancient shoreline of Lake Michigan. This trail now known as the Sand Ridge Trail, still winds its way through Jefferson Park. It follows Milwaukee Avenue towards Six Corners. It connects to another Native American trail at Grand Avenue. Jefferson Park’s story is deeply intertwined with the history of Chicago’s growth. In the 1830s, Elijah Wentworth built a tavern near what is now the Jefferson Park Metra Station. This marked the beginning of a small settlement. Jefferson Park officially became a township in 1850, named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson. The arrival of the railroad further spurred its growth. The area became a hub, attracting German and Polish immigrants. By the turn of the 20th century, streetcar lines connected Jefferson Park to the rest of the city. This led to a surge in population and diversity. Victorian graystones, A-frames, and bungalows became common sights. Jefferson Park also became a transportation hub, earning the nickname “Gateway to Chicago.” The Kennedy Expressway, built in 1959, drastically altered the landscape. It provided faster access to downtown but also divided the neighborhood. The Jefferson Park Transit Station opened in 1970. This brought together CTA and Regional Transit Authority buses, Greyhound buses, the Metra, and the ‘L’. The ‘L’ line was later extended to O’Hare Airport. Today, Jefferson Park remains a vibrant community. It boasts a rich Polish heritage, evident in the Copernicus Center and numerous Polish businesses. This former movie palace now serves as a Polish cultural center. The Gift Theatre, founded in 2000, has found a home here. From its humble beginnings as a tavern stop to its current status as a bustling transportation hub, Jefferson Park retains its charm. It embodies a unique blend of old and new, tradition and progress.
