Amidst the greenery of Square des Épinettes stands a tribute to an extraordinary man. It is the Jean Leclaire Sculpture. This sculpture immortalizes Jean Leclaire, a Parisian entrepreneur. He was a figure of great importance to this area.

The Square des Épinettes offers a tranquil escape. It sits in Paris’s 17th arrondissement. Jean-Camille Formigé designed this green space in 1893. It includes sculptures of local luminaries. Maria Deraismes, a feminist, is also honored here.

Originally erected in 1896, the Jean Leclaire Sculpture faced a dark period. In 1941, during the German occupation, it was melted down. The metal was used for armaments. This act sought to erase a symbol of French ingenuity.

The statue’s destruction was a loss for the community. But the spirit of Jean Leclaire endured. In 1971, the statue was recast and re-installed. This act restored a piece of local history.

Aimé-Jules Dalou created the original bronze sculpture. The pedestal design came from Jean-Camille Formigé. The re-installed sculpture stands as a testament to resilience. One detail is now missing. The worker once held a bucket in his right hand.

Jean Leclaire was a man ahead of his time. He was an entrepreneur. He left a lasting impact on Paris. His story is one of innovation and community spirit.

Wander through Square des Épinettes. Admire the Jean Leclaire Sculpture. Reflect on the stories it holds. The square spans over 10 hectares. It provides a peaceful retreat in the city. It also provides a journey through local history. The Jean Leclaire Sculpture invites contemplation. It connects us to Paris’s past.
