“A Marseille’s athletic star” whispers the Jean Bouin Plaque. This unassuming granite plaque tells a powerful story. It commemorates Jean Bouin a legendary Marseillais athlete. He was born in Marseille in 1888. He grew up in the city mastering the art of running.

Jean Bouin’s passion ignited in 1903. He met Louis Pautex winner of Marseille’s first marathon. Inspired Jean Bouin developed an incredible talent for running. He joined the Phocée Club de Marseille. He quickly rose to fame winning 14 out of 17 races in 1904. His success continued. He joined the Club Athlétique de la Société Générale de Marseille.

Jean Bouin’s athletic achievements were astounding. He broke five world records and twenty-two French records. He excelled in cross-country running and the one-hour race. He was a three-time French cross-country champion. He was also a three-time world cross-country champion. In 1911 he set a world record for the 10000 meters. His record stood undefeated until 1942. He also set a French record for the one-hour race at Marseille’s Velodrome covering 18.588 kilometers.

Jean Bouin’s training methods were revolutionary. He was a pioneer. He prioritized diet intense and varied training. He followed the Natural Method of Hébert. This method focused on muscle strengthening. Jean Bouin was one of its most enthusiastic followers.

At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics Jean Bouin won a silver medal in the 5000 meters. He finished just two-tenths of a second behind the winner. Undeterred he broke the world record for the one-hour race in 1913. He covered 19.021 kilometers. Fifteen thousand spectators cheered him on. This was his last international triumph. Tragically his life ended prematurely. He died in battle during World War I in 1914 at only 25.

After the war a memorial was created to honor Jean Bouin. The Petit Provençal newspaper and Jean Bouin’s friends raised funds. Sculptor Constant Roux created a bronze statue. It depicts Jean Bouin mid-stride capturing his dynamism. Initially placed in Parc Borély it was later moved to the Vélodrome stadium. This Jean Bouin Plaque stands as a lasting tribute. It remembers this remarkable athlete and his sacrifice. His legacy continues to inspire.
