Did the Viscounts of Valmor foresee their final resting place becoming a work of art itself? Here at the Jazigo dos Viscondes de Valmor, we uncover a story of patronage, artistry, and eternal recognition. The Jazigo, located at the entrance of the Alto de São João Cemetery, is more than just a tomb. It’s a testament to the Viscounts’ legacy as patrons of the arts, particularly architecture. The very Premio Valmor architecture prize bears their name. This striking funerary construction, designed by architect Álvaro Machado, is an architectural marvel in its own right. Four statues flank the Jazigo, representing Architecture, Sculpture, Engraving, and Painting. These were created by renowned sculptors Costa Mota, Fernandes Sá, Tomás Costa, and Moreira Rato, adding another layer of artistic significance to this space. The Jazigo dos Viscondes de Valmor stands as a beautiful tribute to the family’s influence and passion for the arts. Their final resting place has, fittingly, become a piece of art itself.
