A hidden oasis in the bustling 10th arrondissement. This is Jardin Villemin-Mahsa Jina Amini. A green haven unexpectedly named for a young woman’s fight for freedom.

Before it was a haven of peace it held a different story. Once stood the military hospital Villemin. Established in 1861 it cared for soldiers wounded in battle. Its monumental entrance still stands. Today it marks the entrance to the garden itself. The hospital’s namesake was Dr Jean-Antoine Villemin. He proved in 1865 that tuberculosis was contagious. A crucial discovery changing the way the world viewed the disease.

The hospital closed in 1968. Plans for a highway interchange threatened the site. Fortunately those plans were abandoned. In 1977 the garden opened. It was expanded four times adding green space to the neighborhood. The garden became a place of refuge. Many asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants passed through. They waited for a chance to reach Britain or obtain asylum in France.

In 2005 something unique bloomed. Le Poireau Agile opened. This shared garden became the first of its kind in a Parisian public park. This is a testament to community spirit and urban gardening. People cultivate plants together. This creates a space of exchange and solidarity.

On June 7 2023 the garden was renamed. It honored Mahsa Jina Amini. This Iranian woman died after being arrested by morality police. Her death sparked worldwide protests. The renaming of the garden was a symbol of solidarity and remembrance. The inauguration took place on September 16th 2023 the anniversary of her death.

Today Jardin Villemin-Mahsa Jina Amini is more than a park. It is a place with many stories. From its history as a hospital to its role as a sanctuary. The garden honors both those who served and those who fight for freedom. Stroll through its paths and reflect. Remember its layers of history. Let the lush green space rejuvenate you. Take a moment to contemplate its dual symbolism. Reflect on the past while appreciating its hopeful future. This is Jardin Villemin-Mahsa Jina Amini. A symbol of resilience and hope in the heart of Paris.
