Tucked away within the prestigious Hôtel des Invalides, lies the Jardin de l’Abondance. It’s a tranquil oasis, a hidden gem amidst the grandeur of Parisian life. The Jardin de l’Abondance isn’t directly accessible from the bustling streets. You must first traverse the historic Hôtel des Invalides to reach this secluded sanctuary. Imagine stepping through the hallowed halls of the Invalides, a place steeped in military history. Then, emerging into a serene garden. Neatly trimmed boxwood borders enclose lush lawns. Cone-shaped yew trees stand sentinel. Towering linden and plane trees line the pathways, offering shade and a sense of tranquility. The choice of plane trees is particularly interesting. They were prized in ancient civilizations for their beauty and shade, even though they don’t bear fruit. Socrates himself is said to have discoursed on the immortality of the soul beneath the branches of a plane tree. The Jardin de l’Abondance is a peaceful retreat. But it’s also a testament to history. The Hôtel des Invalides was built in 1676 on the plains of Grenelle. Originally situated outside the city limits, it was commissioned by King Louis XIV. He envisioned a place to care for his wounded soldiers, who until then had been housed in monasteries. The project was a joint effort of architects Libéral Bruant and Jules-Hardouin Mansart. It quickly became home to as many as 6,000 soldiers. A governor was appointed to oversee this “city within a city,” a tradition that continues to this day.
