Imagine yourself strolling along a peaceful path, completely unaware that you’re traversing a forgotten railway line. You’ve arrived at the Jardin de la Coulée Verte, a unique and charming park built on top of an elevated railway line. This iconic park, located in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, was inaugurated in 1993 and is a prime example of urban renewal. It’s a triumph over adversity. The former Vincennes railway line, which once connected the Gare de la Bastille to the southeast of Paris, became abandoned in the 1960s. The old tracks and crumbling viaducts became an eyesore. Demolition seemed like the only option. But the architects Jacques Vergely and Philippe Mathieux saw a different vision—they imagined a raised park instead of rubble. Their ingenious idea, the first of its kind globally, transformed the abandoned line into a vibrant green haven. Many Parisians initially opposed the project, suggesting it was a waste of money. But, much like the Eiffel Tower, the Parisian public eventually embraced the Coulée Verte as a beloved part of their city.
The park is divided into two sections. The first section, built over a series of red-brick vaults called the Viaduc des Arts, is a beautiful example of urban design. The former railway arches, now glass-fronted shops and galleries, showcase local art and craft. The second section, below street level, offers a tranquil escape through ivy-covered tunnels and trees. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquil beauty and unique charm of this Parisian green space. The Jardin de la Coulée Verte is a reminder that something beautiful can emerge from the unexpected, even amidst the chaos of an urban landscape.
