Picture this Jardin Balbuena a vibrant neighborhood in Mexico City. It wasn’t always paved streets and modern buildings. Once it was known as the Potrero de Balbuena a grassy paddock where locals grazed their cattle. This peaceful pasture was later transformed into Llanos de Balbuena the Balbuena Plains owned by the influential Braniff family.

They established two haciendas Magdalena and Santa Lucia. But the land’s destiny was about to change dramatically. On January 8 1910 Alberto Braniff a pioneering aviator took to the skies above Mexico City. He piloted a Voisin airplane imported from France. This marked the first flight in Mexico and the second in Latin America. Llanos de Balbuena unexpectedly became Mexico’s first airfield.

The significance grew. On November 30 1911 President Francisco I Madero took flight. He became the first Mexican head of state to experience air travel. This momentous occasion also took place above the Llanos de Balbuena. The fledgling Mexican Air Force later used the area for bomb target practice.

Fast forward to the early 1950s. The Bank of Mexico funded the development of Jardin Balbuena. Renowned architects Mario Pani and Agustin Landa Verdugo shaped the neighborhood’s infrastructure. They created Unidad Kennedy the largest public housing project in Jardin Balbuena named in honor of John F Kennedy.

The area boasts a rich history and a unique blend of old and new. The legacy of aviation and the forward thinking urban design are intertwined. In 1968 the Agustin Melgar Olympic Velodrome opened its doors. It hosted the thrilling track cycling events of the 1968 Summer Olympics. Today Jardin Balbuena stands as a testament to Mexico City’s dynamic past and its vibrant present. Its streets are filled with the energy of daily life but its history whispers through its architecture and open spaces. You can almost sense the spirits of past aviators and the architects who gave shape to this unique neighborhood. Enjoy the rest of your exploration of this fascinating place.
