Crumbling stones whisper tales of flour and toil. This is the Janefield flour mill ruin. It stands as a silent testament to a bygone era. A time when the Plenty River powered the wheels of industry.

The Janefield flour mill wasn’t always a ruin. It began its life in 1842. Built near the Plenty River. The area wasn’t even called Janefield then. It was known as Springfield. This changed possibly after the death of Jane Brock in 1847. Jane was the wife of James Brock a local landowner. His father had bought the mill.

The mill’s early success hints at the area’s fertile soil. Sparse tree cover made farming easy. Settlers flocked to the area. A Church of Scotland and a school appeared in the late 1840s. An inn and post office opened in the 1850s. A bluestone Presbyterian church was built in 1861.

The Janefield flour mill thrived for a while. It likely closed around 1858. Definitely by 1862. Water supply issues may have played a role. The mill’s closure marked a turning point. The school closed in 1877. The area’s focus shifted. Janefield’s name faded into obscurity.

However Janefield wasn’t forgotten entirely. The State Government acquired land in 1914. They planned an institution for intellectually disabled children. World War I changed plans. The site became a military base. Then a postwar sanatorium.

The Janefield Colony for Mental Defectives opened in 1937. A Special School opened alongside it. The facility housed 300 residents. It continued to grow despite concerns about its standards. It became the Janefield Training Centre in 1978. Housing 493 residents.

By the 1980s residents moved to community housing. A smaller residential facility remained. The Special School closed in 1993. The name Janefield again faded. Only Janefield Drive remains as a reminder.

Today only ruins stand. But the stones echo the lives lived here. The flour ground the families who settled here. The institution’s residents. The mill’s story is a small piece of Melbourne’s history. A reminder that even ruins hold stories waiting to be discovered.
