Why is it called the “Lady in the Middle”? We’re standing before the Jane Byrne Interchange, a colossal web of concrete and steel that has become a Chicago icon. But before it earned the name of a formidable mayor, it was known as the Circle Interchange. This moniker came about in 1964, reflecting its distinctive circular design. The Jane Byrne Interchange wasn’t always a smooth operator. Built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it quickly gained notoriety for its monstrous traffic jams. Imagine, 400,000 vehicles battling through this labyrinth daily! It was rated the country’s third-worst traffic bottleneck in 2004 and even earned the dubious honor of having the worst freight congestion in a 2010 U.S. Department of Transportation study. Something had to be done. Enter an $800 million renovation project, a Herculean effort that began in 2013 and finally concluded in December 2022. This massive undertaking aimed to untangle the Jane Byrne Interchange’s notorious knots and improve traffic flow. It involved a complete overhaul, including the addition of a soaring flyover ramp and the widening of crucial ramps. The Jane Byrne Interchange, with its new lease on life, stands as a testament to Chicago’s commitment to progress and its ability to tackle even the most daunting challenges.
