Tucked away near Navy Pier, what do you think about this 4.31-acre green space? This is Jane Addams Memorial Park. It is a tranquil escape in Chicago. Jane Addams Park offers a slice of quiet beauty.
This park is named for Jane Addams. She was a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Addams founded Hull House. It was one of the first settlement houses in North America. Hull House provided social services. It also offered cultural opportunities. These helped immigrants on Chicago’s Near West Side.
Let’s step back in time. Between 1914 and 1916, Chicago created a municipal pier. The city also made a neighboring park. They filled in submerged land for this. It was east of Lake Shore Drive. It was also north of Grand Avenue. The new pier quickly became a naval training site during World War I.
In 1927, the city renamed the structure Navy Pier. The adjacent park took on the new name too. It was known as Navy Pier Park.
Fast forward to 1957. Navy Pier Park went to the Chicago Park District. This happened through the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act. In 1996, something special happened. The Park District renamed the park. It became Jane Addams Memorial Park. This honored Jane Addams. She was a world-renowned social reformer.
Addams worked tirelessly. She promoted legal reforms. She helped create the first juvenile-court law. She also pushed for an eight-hour workday for women.
Jane Addams Park once featured a sculpture. It was called Helping Hands. Louise Bourgeois designed it. It honored Addams. Sadly, vandals damaged the sculptures. They had to be removed. Helping Hands was restored later. It moved to Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens. It still honors Addams’ work.
Today, Jane Addams Park features the Jane Addams Memorial Natural Area. You can find native prairie plantings here. They cover 0.23 acres.
