Endeavour. That’s the motto of James Cook High School. A fitting tribute isn’t it? Standing before this impressive building you can almost feel the spirit of exploration. James Cook High School opened its doors in February 1968. It was a time of great change in New Zealand. The school’s name reflects the bicentennial of Captain Cook’s voyage. A bold choice at the time. It sparked widespread interest.
The school’s design follows a standard plan. Two-storey H-shaped classroom blocks. They are classic examples of New Zealand school architecture from that era. But James Cook High School is more than just buildings and classrooms. It’s a place where students from diverse backgrounds come together. Over 40% of the students identify as Māori. Another 45% come from Pacific Island heritage. Samoans Tongans and Cook Islands Māori students form the largest Pacific groups. A truly multicultural community.
The original crest was a broad shield. A golden ship with white sails and red pennants sailed through waves. The Southern Cross shone with four gold stars. The crest and uniform were modernised in 2013 and 2014. The school’s colors are royal blue and gold. The motto Endeavour speaks volumes about the school’s values. It means striving for goals. Showing strength character and relentless effort. It represents hope faith and facing new challenges. Above all it is about giving your best. In every aspect of life.
The school boasts notable alumni. Names like Scott Dixon the famous motor racing driver. Or Joe Rokocoko a legendary rugby union player. Then there is Stephen Berry a well-known politician and commentator. Even the singing group Ma-V-Elle features several former students. James Cook High School has shaped countless lives.
Ms Tina Filipo is the current principal. She carries the torch of Endeavour forward. Many principals have served this school. Each contributing to its legacy. Mr Grant McMillan Mr Vaughan Couillault and Mr Bryan Smith among others. Their leadership has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in the school’s success. So here you stand.
