The James C Roberts Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of a life cut short. It’s a simple yet powerful structure, an obelisk of austere granite, standing tall against the Melbourne sky. James C. Roberts, a lieutenant who died in the Boer War, once played in Royal Park as a child. This very park, where we stand now, was his childhood playground. The James C Roberts Memorial tells a story of a local boy. He grew up playing in this park. He went on to study engineering at Ormond College, after attending Carlton College. He even served in the University corps of officers, receiving his commission in the Mounted Rifles. The call of duty took him to South Africa. There, he was wounded at Pink Hill on February 12, 1900. He succumbed to his wounds the following day at Rensburg. The inscription on the James C Roberts Memorial reads: “Erected in memory of Lieutenant James C. Roberts who was killed in the South African (Boer) War and who played as a boy in this park.” This obelisk, erected around 1900, stands approximately 3 meters tall. It serves not only as a tribute to Roberts but also as a reminder of the many young lives lost in the Boer War. The James C Roberts Memorial is more than just a monument.
